City & Guilds 3666 Comms Cabling (Fibre)
PQMS are approval to run the Telecomunications -- Fibre Internal and External scheme 3666 by the awarding body City and Guilds. This qualification is appropriate for potential or new technicians, or managers and network designers who need an introduction to this area of the industry
Fibre splicing and Testing is the growth industry with plenty of potential for you to develop a rewarding and successfull career.
To achieve this qualification, candidates must take the core unit -- Unit 1:
Unit 1. Basic principles of communication systems
Plus a choice of any of the following units:
Unit 2. Fibre optic cabling in an internal environment
Unit 3. Fibre optic cabling in an external environment
Each unit is assessed by an online multiple choice test. Optional units include an assignment combining both practical and written parts. In addition to the technical content, we also cover health and safety, environmental and European development issues as appropriate to each unit.

Unit 1 Basic principles of communication systems
• safe working practices in communication systems
• the theory of telecomunications
• key symbols used and SI units -- measurements used
Unit 2 Fibre optic cabling in an internal environment
• prepare coated fibre for connectorisation and splicing.
• Complete a Risk Assessment prior to installation of optical fibres in an internal environment
• prepare bare fibre for splicing using correct techniques
• Work safely with optical fibres in an external environment • Complete a Risk Assessment prior to installation of optical fibres in an external environment • Follow recommended installation procedures • Prepare fibre optic cable for fibre splicing • Joint fibre optic cables by splicing • Terminate fibre optic cable by splicing on pre-terminated pigtails • Test fibre optic links • Work safely when installing, splicing, terminating and testing optical fibre in an external network • Check cable and components before installation • Check that correct cable laying procedures are followed
