Fibre

 PQMS have recently been awarded centre approval to run the Telecomunications (Fibre Internal and External) scheme (3666) by the awarding body City and Guilds. This qualification is appropriate for potential or new technicians, or managers and network designers who need an introduction to the area. To achieve this qualification, candidates must take the core unit (Unit 1):

      Unit 1.   Basic principles of communication systems

Plus a choice of any of the following units:

       Unit 2.    Fibre optic cabling in an internal environment

       Unit 3.    Fibre optic cabling in an external environment

       Unit 4.    Copper cabling in an internal environment

Each unit is assessed by an online multiple choice test. Optional units include an assignment combining both practical and written parts, as well as the test. In addition to the technical content, centres would be expected to cover health and safety, environmental and European development issues as appropriate to each unit. To provide progression from the above qualification, the following qualifications are available:

The level 2 certificate (3666) has been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and is therefore eligible for funding. The qualification is also recognised by the Fibreoptic Industry Association (FIA)
